When couples begin planning their wedding film, attention often gravitates toward the finished products (highlight films, teasers, and documentary-style edits.) Yet there is another component that quietly holds extraordinary value to some: raw footage. While it may seem technical or unfamiliar at first glance, raw footage can provide comfort to some while others would never desire such a thing in a million years. What Exactly Is Raw Footage?
In filmmaking, raw footage refers to the original, unedited video files recorded throughout your wedding day. These clips have not yet been color-graded, audio-balanced, or shaped into a cohesive narrative. Instead, they exist as captured: genuine moments, candid interactions, and the natural rhythm of the day, ranging from the bustle of getting ready to emotional embraces during the reception. While your final film weaves these moments into a curated story, raw footage offers the complete visual archive, including scenes that do not appear in the edited version. Viewed together, these files represent the full spectrum of your wedding day, unfiltered and authentic.
Raw footage is often delivered as hundred of clips which often means hundreds of terabytes so raw footage is best delivered on a hard drive although delivering through the cloud is also a popular method, although it may require a bit more “know how.”
Clips can range from 5 seconds to an hour long clip depending on what is being filmed.

So who watches the raw footage? The clear answer is the couple however, after filming weddings for 15+ years I’m not finding that its people’s kids who primarily enjoy and watch the raw footage. Not only do they have the time, they also express the most interest in seeing and potentially hearing loved ones they never knew or a younger version of the relatives they do.
